Mike Soucy Reviews CAMP’s Speed 2.0 Helmet

speed helmetMike Soucy, American Mountain Guide/IFMGA Guide, recently reviews CAMP USA’s Speed 2.0 Helmet, size medium.

I used CAMP’s Speed 2.0 helmet over a week primarily for ski mountaineering, but also for some waterfall ice guiding. It’s a great helmet for guiding because it’s lightweight and versatile. A light helmet on the head is truly less fatiguing.

As with any of the newer ultralight helmet designs, I still have questions regarding durability, but this helmet held up well during intensive recreational and guiding use. The external polycarbonate shell seems to give this helmet an advantage over some others in protecting against dings and dents.

The sizing seems to run just a bit on the small side. I consistently wear a medium and this fits reasonably well, but just a touch smaller than other medium helmets out there. It does adjust to fit over a hat easily.

As far as the functionality, the Speed 2.0’s light weight is very advantageous. And the external vents do their job in keeping the helmet cool

The helmet comes with tabs for a headlamp already in situ, which is nice. The rear tab also does well to secure ski goggles. It is also worth noting that ski goggles actually fit quite well on this helmet. I would recommend it for ski mountaineering or alpine climbing where goggles may be worn.

The bottom line is this is a very nice helmet. I like it and will continue to use it, especially for ski mountaineering, despite the hideous green color. CAMP appears to solve some of the short-term durability issues that others in its class have. I’d especially recommend it for light and fast travel or racing.
