Brief Bio
John became an IFMGA guide in 2006 after extensive expedition guiding in Alaska, on 8000-meter peaks like Everest, Cho Oyu, and Shishapangma. He founded the Northwest Mountain School in 1994, which he still runs with his wife, IFMGA Guide Olivia Race. He is now based in Leavenworth, WA where he lives with Olivia and their two children. John served on the AMGA Board of Directors for 6 years. Outside guiding and climbing John currently spends a ton of time on his mountain bike and struggles to get better at surfing. He has guided 20 Denali expeditions and is finding the transition to parenthood amusingly harder than nearly anything he has done in the mountains. These days his focus is on spending quality time in the mountains with the right people.
