At first glance I thought it odd that Camp Chef’s Everest 2 Burner Stove was named after the highest mountain in the world, since it’s a big, double-burner stove clearly created for car camping. I wouldn’t exactly take the 12-pound Camp Chef Everest on a mountain—no one would. But, as I soon learned upon using the Everest, the rationale behind the name is to highlight its position in the car-camping-stove market. The Camp Chef Everest is the must-have when driving up to your camp. Why? Preciously because it isn’t a beast size-wise, relatively speaking, but still handles like one.
I’ve now used it four nights and five mornings specifically on car-camping trips (park, camp, zero approach, voila!). It’s the time to bring all your luxury items: the tent you can literally stand in if you’re eight feet tall, behemoth chairs with four beverage holders each, a bocce ball or crochet set, and a gigantic cooler you could hide in to escape the summer heat.
Shockingly enough, with car-camping grandiose aspirations in mind, the Everest actually takes up very little room in the car. It’s on the smaller side of massive (13.5″ L, 23.5″ W, and 4″ H), but still packs a punch. To wit, with two burners, we had quinoa in a pot alongside a steaming pan of vegetables. On those sleepy mornings, my friends flipped dinner-plate-sized pancakes beside grilling bacon. If set on high, those burners would scorch anything in two minutes: boiling water is rapid pace! The Everest is the solution for making several quick cups of coffee so your climber partners will get out of bed. The sensitive, adjustable knob settings are key and work like a charm: simmer, boil, sauté, grill, anything you want. The push-button starter is always handy and less involved than that cigarette lighter you always forget.
I like how simply the Everest cooks, with minimal noise. Stainless-steel construction makes the stove easy to clean, and the three side wind barriers keep that flame roaring despite gusts. Due to its cooking efficiency, the Everest is definitely a gas saver. The Camp Chef Everest is best used car camping with a range of two to six users. Larger group numbers might require a second Everest or a larger stove. (If you need a second bocce set, you need another Everest stove.)
