La Sportiva Tara – reviewed by Lindsay Fixmer
In what terrain and under what conditions have I not used this puff?
For the past two months I’ve lived in the La Sportiva Tara as my outermost layer. Donning this piece at multi-pitch ice belays, the sport crag, around the campfire playing guitar, and camp at 12,000ft in -8 degree frigid temps and rough 60mph winds.
The Tara has kept me warm and happy (or at least without misery: how happy are you in -8 degrees?). I’ve demo’d this puff in varying conditions ranging from ice climbing in Hyalite & Cody to rock climbing in Ten Sleep and Red Rocks. From Isafjordur, Iceland to the High Sierra the Tara has been my shelter from the storm.
For me the best feature of the La Sportiva Tara is its compact-ability but not at the expense of warmth.
The Tara packs small and remains incredibly insulating and warm. I can stuff it in to the last remaining crevice in my large overnight pack or a small multi-pitch 10L with room to spare for first aid kit, snacks and small water. Even though it looks slim, it’s incredibly warm. This puff is made for cold, function and comfort.
Additionally, I am very fond of the fit and cut. This includes a large hood with inner gasket to grip a helmet. The length of the back is ideal, covering your entire backside. Also ideal are the long, cuffed arms and the inside chest pocket that perfectly fits your iPhone (someone must have measured to fit a smart phone).
The only downside to the Tara is the fabric won’t withstand my attempt to scorch it over an open flame. The material is also sensitive to abrasion, so be extra cautious around rocky terrain. This is the trade-off for a lightweight, technical down jacket.
Overall, I’m a fan! Sportiva won me over with its world class footwear from rock shoes to mountaineering boots and their women’s apparel sports the same attention to detail.
