Review: CAMP Corsa Nanotech Ice Axe

CAMP corsa ice axe review2The second of our series of reviews on CAMP’s Nanotech models, by Jonathon Spitzer, American Mountain Guide/IFMGA Guide. Read about CAMP’s Corsa Ice Axe.

I tested the CAMP Corsa Nanotech Ice Axe while on a ski mountaineering objective in the Wasatch Range in Utah. We climbed a 3,000’ alpine ridge route on the South Ridge of Mount Superior. Because of its light weight and construction, this axe is ideal for a variety of mountaineering-type activities, such ski mountaineering, general mountaineering, and expedition climbing to Denali or for big ski traverses.

CAMP USA claims this B-rated ice axe is the second lightest mountaineering axe in the world; I believe them. The Corsa Nanotech is great for guiding because of that. It weighs in at just 250g and it is certified by the UIAA.

Though made primarily of aluminum, the CAMP Corsa incorporates some cutting-edge technology—steel material on the spike and pick. I felt this feature really increased the security of the climber on steeper terrain. The spike also arrived exceptionally sharp and has a good point for penetrating firm conditions. Most ultra lightweight axes are not that sharp, so this is a major bonus for this ice axe. Plus, there’s a wear indicator on the pick that warns when the pick has become too dull. One downside to the spike is there is an open section at the bottom that would fill with snow and then become difficult to clean out. The adze is light and small, though not ideal for chopping steps.

Another minor thing to note about the Corsa Nanotech is that after one day of climbing, the axe looked beat up and the bottom grip on the shaft was peeling off. I’m confident it will continue to perform well as its core construction is excellent. However, in terms of appearance it looks very worn out at one day. Probably for the general public this would not be an issue. But as a mountain guide, appearance and first impressions mean a lot. The climbers I’m guiding might have a different impression of me if my gear looks beat up.

This is a classic mountaineering axe that comes in three sizes: 50 cm, 60 cm, and 70 cm, of which I used the 60 cm length. I neither loved nor hated the Corsa, but I will continue to use it on more trips around the world because of its positive features.
